The Oria take

The useful thing here is the haptic: the phone vibrates the rhythm, so you can put it in a pocket and follow a breathing pattern without counting or watching a screen. Exercises run from about a minute, which is short enough to use before something rather than instead of it. The free set is small.

What is Breathwrk?

A breathing app with short exercises grouped by what you want from them — winding down, waking up, steadying yourself before something — where the phone shows, sounds and vibrates the rhythm so you are not counting. Now owned by Peloton, and included with a Peloton membership.

What it offers

  • Short exercises grouped by sleep, calm, energy and focus
  • A visual, a sound and a haptic to breathe along to
  • Exercises from around a minute upward
  • Customisable pattern length for people who know what they want

What we like

  • The haptic means you can follow it without looking at the screen
  • Short enough to use in the moment rather than as a session
  • Included at no extra cost for existing Peloton members

Things to consider

  • The free set is limited compared with the subscription
  • Peloton's ownership means more cross-promotion than there used to be

Questions people ask

Is Breathwrk free?

Some exercises are free and a subscription unlocks the rest. Peloton All Access, Guide and App+ members have it included with their membership.

How long does an exercise take?

Most run from about a minute to a few minutes, which is the point — they are meant to fit into a day rather than be scheduled.

Do I need to watch the screen?

No. The phone can vibrate the rhythm, so it works in a pocket or with the screen face down.

Prefer practising with other people?

An app is a good companion between sessions. These are the places in Perth doing the same thing in a room.
