The Oria take

The database is why people use it: almost anything you eat in Australia is already in there, including supermarket products. That is also its weakness — much of the data is entered by other users and some of it is wrong. Useful for a defined stretch of paying attention. Daily calorie counting does not suit everybody, and if tracking food has been difficult for you before, this is not the app to start with.

What is MyFitnessPal?

A food and exercise diary with an enormous database of foods and branded products, macro tracking and syncing with most fitness apps and wearables. It suits somebody who has been told to track what they eat, or who wants to understand their intake for a defined period.

What it offers

  • A very large food database, including branded and supermarket items
  • Barcode scanning for packaged food
  • Macro as well as energy tracking
  • Syncs with most wearables and fitness apps

What we like

  • Almost everything you eat is already in the database
  • Works on the web as well as the phone
  • Connects to nearly everything else you might already use

Things to consider

  • Much of the database is user-submitted, and some entries are wrong
  • Which features are free has changed repeatedly over the years
  • Daily calorie counting does not suit everyone, and can become its own preoccupation

Questions people ask

Is MyFitnessPal free?

Food and exercise logging works on the free tier. A number of features sit behind Premium, and which ones has changed over the years, so check what is included before subscribing.

How accurate is the food database?

Mixed. Verified entries are reliable; a great many are submitted by other users and are not checked. Prefer entries marked as verified where there is a choice.

Is calorie counting right for me?

That is a question for you and, if it is relevant, a dietitian or GP. Tracking suits some people for a defined period and suits others not at all.
