How nature & outdoor wellness is taught in Perth

A good deal of this category is free. Bushwalking clubs and Heart Foundation walking groups run scheduled walks across the metro at no cost beyond turning up, and park-based tai chi and outdoor fitness groups sit at the cheap end of everything else in the directory.

Beyond the walking: forest bathing sessions that move slowly through bushland with a guide, surf and ocean programmes run off the northern and western beaches, and equine-assisted sessions on properties out past Oakford and Byford — those last ones are booked by appointment, not dropped into.

The scheduling constraint is the Perth summer. From December to March almost everything outdoors runs early morning or after five, and groups that walk the Hills shift their start times by the month. Winter is when the Bibbulmun-adjacent walks and the Hills trails come into their own. Check the weather rather than the calendar, and bring more water than looks necessary.

Our guide covers where to sit outdoors, season by season. Related: hiking and bushwalking, eco therapy, retreats and day escapes.
