How senior wellness is taught in Perth

Almost everything on this page exists elsewhere in the directory. What makes it a page of its own is who it is run for, and that changes the room more than the activity.

Strength for Life is the one to know: a COTA-endorsed strength and balance programme for people over 50, run by accredited exercise physiologists at sites across the metro, usually needing a GP referral and costing a fraction of a personal trainer. Falls prevention classes are the clinical cousin, run by physiotherapists in groups of three to eight. Chair and gentle yoga do what the names say — no floor work, no getting up and down. The social side is separate again: seniors’ centres, men’s sheds and memory cafés, the last of these designed for people living with dementia and the people who care for them, and open to both together.

On practicalities: ask whether a class needs a GP referral before you turn up, because the subsidised ones usually do. Ask what the group size is — the difference between eight people and twenty-eight is the difference between being watched and being counted. Council-run programmes are typically the cheapest and book by term rather than by session, and many centres run transport.
