How these ratings work

These bars are a guide, not a score of this business. Each starts from Oria Haven’s profile of Meditation as a kind of session, then is adjusted by facts stored on this listing: its price band, its group size and whether it welcomes beginners.

Nobody has rated this particular venue in person, and reviews are not fed in. Where we have no fact about this listing behind a bar — for example how many people share the room — we leave that bar out rather than guess.

They describe the room — how quiet, how physical, how many people — never what a session is supposed to do for you.

Need volunteer to take care of the place that really peaceful. Moreover, if you curious about meditation, you can come here on weekends to study about how to do the meditation in Buddhist ways. Anyway, no need to believe in Buddhism, only respect to us will be lovely.

Old Thai woman helping with the dishwashing at the temple was unbelievably rude. I usually enjoy going to the temple, whether in Thailand or here in Australia, because I go there to make merit and find peace of mind. Instead, I left feeling upset and disappointed. After the meal, everyone was returning their plates and cutlery. I did not know there was a collection station, so I handed her my plate and could not figure out where to put the cutlery. I accidentally placed it on the plate, and in a very rude tone she said to me in Thai, "Look around and see where everyone else is putting it." (มองไปรอบๆด้วยว่าเขาวางกันตรงไหน) As someone from the younger generation, I have to say that people like her are one of the reasons many young people are losing interest in going to the temple. It is not Buddhism that pushes us away. It is the rude behaviour and unkind attitudes of some of the people there. I go to the temple with a happy and sincere heart. I want to make merit with a pure mind and leave feeling peaceful. Instead, she made me feel embarrassed, judged, and unwelcome. I have never gone to a temple expecting free food or free services. Every time I go, I choose to make merit because I genuinely want to. I happily donate money and make offerings to support the temple. I do not expect anything in return except basic kindness and respect. After meeting an old Thai woman like her, I honestly would not recommend this experience to my younger friends or people of my generation. I would rather wait until I return to Thailand to make merit than deal with this kind of atmosphere. A temple should be a place where people feel welcomed and inspired to come back. Sadly, people like her do the opposite. They make visitors feel unwelcome and drive the younger generation away from the temple. If someone chooses to volunteer and help at a temple, they should do it with compassion and kindness. If they cannot, then they should not be doing it at all.

Meditation cushionsRetrospec Sedona Zafu Meditation CushionRetrospec

A crescent zafu filled with buckwheat hulls, with a washable cotton cover and a carry handle. Sits you a little higher than the floor so the knees drop and the back stays upright.

Good for beginners

Goes well with Meditation classes

Why we picked it

The thing most people are missing when they say they cannot sit still is a cushion of the right height. A crescent shape gives the thighs somewhere to go, and buckwheat can be added or taken out until it is yours. It is the first thing we would put in a meditation corner.

A rectangular bolster with a firm core and a soft surface, handmade in the USA. The shape used in restorative and yin classes.

Everyday use

Why we picked it

Restorative yoga is mostly the art of being held up by the right prop, and a bolster is the prop. Hugger Mugger's has been the studio standard for decades because the core does not go soft. Under the knees, along the spine, or across the lap for a long sit.

Why we picked it

The one meditation book we would hand to someone who has never sat down to meditate. The chapters are two or three pages each, secular in tone, and you can open it anywhere. Thirty years on it is still the plainest introduction there is.
