Restorative yoga in Perth

The short answer

4 of the 42 yoga listings in the directory match this view. The count is live, and the order below is members first, then alphabetical — never by rating.

Restorative is the most supported thing on a yoga timetable. Bolsters, blankets and blocks hold you in a small number of shapes so that very little effort is being made, and the class is largely spent still.

Beginner friendly — 3 of the 4 here say so on their own website or timetable.

Restorative yoga in Perth — listings

Horizon Yoga — Sound & float in Cottesloe
4.7 (26 · Google)

Two rooms on the coast — Railway Street in Cottesloe and a second inside the Swanbourne Surf Club — running more than thirty classes a week between them. The timetable is unusually wide for a studio this size: vinyasa and power vinyasa at one end, hatha flow and slow flow in the middle, and yin restorative, yin and yang, and myofascial release at the other. Sound healing runs as its own session and paired with yin.

Worth knowing

The props are the class, not an accommodation, and the studio provides them. Expect to spend most of the hour lying down, and bring a layer — you will not be generating much heat, and rooms are often kept warm for that reason.

Restorative sits close to yin on a timetable and the two are often confused. Yin works into the same shape for several minutes with some sensation; restorative aims for none, with the props taking the weight.

Restorative yoga in Perth — common questions

What is restorative yoga?

A style built entirely around support. A handful of shapes are propped with bolsters, blankets and blocks so that almost no muscular effort is being made, and each is held for several minutes.

How many Perth studios run restorative yoga?

4 of the 42 yoga listings in the directory publish restorative classes. The count is live.

What is the difference between restorative and yin?

How much you are asked to feel. Yin holds a shape long enough for sensation to build; restorative props you up so there is as little as possible. Studios frequently run both and the timetable names which.

Is restorative yoga suitable if I have never done yoga?

Studios generally list it as an all-levels class, and there is no sequence to learn. Tell the teacher before you start if anything needs adapting — the props are adjusted to you rather than the other way round.

What happens in a restorative class?

The teacher sets up each shape with props, you settle into it, and you stay there for several minutes while very little is said. Expect four or five shapes across an hour, and to be repositioned rather than corrected.
