Explore Reformer PilatesReformer and mat Pilates compared: what you work on, where the resistance comes from, class sizes, what a class costs in Perth, and whether you need an intro session before you book.
The difference is the equipment, and everything else follows from it. Mat Pilates is your own bodyweight on the floor, sometimes with a ring, band or small ball. Reformer Pilates is a sliding carriage on springs, and the springs can make an exercise either harder or easier than the floor version — which is why the machine is not simply the advanced option.
This is also the answer to “Pilates vs reformer Pilates”. When people say plain Pilates they usually mean the mat class, so the comparison below is the same one. What changes is the booking: most studios ask you to do an intro class or a private session before joining a general reformer class, and nearly all of them require grip socks.

A boutique loft-style studio in East Victoria Park running mat, reformer, arc and barre classes alongside slower release sessions, with private and duo appointments for people who want the equipment to themselves. Teaching leans form-first and beginner-friendly.
Two studios south of the river — Entrance Road in Coogee and Hammond Road in Cockburn Central — with the broadest Pilates timetable in the area: barre, clinical, reformer, mat, trampoline reformer, pregnancy and post-natal classes, plus TRX and boxilates. Classes run mornings, evenings and weekends. A two-week beginners' trial is $59, and a fifteen-minute phone consult is free.
A northern-suburbs studio running the Bikram sequence — twenty-six postures in front of a mirror at 38 degrees — alongside a heated vinyasa flow, reformer Pilates and unheated yin. Beginners' yoga runs as its own class rather than as an afterthought, and the studio is explicit that flexibility, strength and balance are not entry requirements.
A Bulwer Street practice running its Pilates on the clinic side of the line: a one-to-one session with a physiotherapist comes before any class, and classes are then capped at three people so nobody is working unwatched. Reformer, mat and a mums-and-bubs class run on the same timetable. Classes are $70, or $65 each in a six-class pack.
